Getting Your First Tattoo: What to Expect, From Consultation to Healed Skin

Tattoo artist and client reviewing a design sketch at a wooden table during a consultation

Every tattooist remembers their first piece — the nerves, the questions, the fear of regret. A good studio should remove all three. Here is exactly what happens when you book with us, so the only surprise is how calm the process feels.

Step 1: The consultation (free, 30 minutes)

You bring ideas; we bring honest answers. We will discuss placement, size, style and budget, look at healed examples of similar work, and tell you frankly if an idea will not age well. You will leave with a sketch direction and a quote. There is no deposit pressure — about a third of our clients book weeks after their consult.

Step 2: The design

Custom work takes one to two weeks. Your artist sends a draft for feedback, refines it once or twice, and finalises the stencil. Nothing is tattooed until you approve the design on paper first.

Step 3: The session

Eat a real meal beforehand and skip alcohol for 24 hours. We place the stencil together — you approve the exact position in a mirror before any ink. Then the needle: most first-timers describe it as a persistent scratch rather than pain, and fine-line pieces are gentler still. We break every hour, and the studio is appointment-only, so the space is quiet and private.

  • Sleep well and eat beforehand — low blood sugar is the main reason people feel faint.
  • Wear clothing that gives easy access to the placement.
  • Bring headphones if music helps you relax.
  • Tell your artist immediately if you feel dizzy — it happens, and we are ready for it.

Step 4: Healing

You leave bandaged, with printed aftercare instructions and a direct WhatsApp line to your artist. Photos at day three and day fourteen are welcome — we check healing on every first tattoo. Read our humid-climate aftercare guide for the full routine.

The right first tattoo is never impulsive. It is the one you have thought about for a year, drawn by an artist who listened.
