Tattoo Aftercare in Singapore's Humid Climate: A Complete Guide

Tattoo aftercare balm, gentle soap and bandage on linen with a cherry blossom branch

Singapore is hot, humid and unforgiving on a healing tattoo — sweat, sun and standing water all change the rules. The principles are simple: keep it clean, keep it lightly moisturised, keep it out of the sun and off your fingers. What follows is the exact aftercare routine we give every client before they leave the studio.

I. Right after your session

We cover the fresh tattoo with plastic wrap for 1–2 hours — shorter in hot weather. Don’t touch the area, and let only clean hands near it: this is how infection stays out.

II. The first two days

  • Shower daily as normal, but don’t soak the tattoo. Rinse with warm water and pat dry gently with a soft towel — no harsh bath products.
  • Wear loose, soft clothing. Avoid anything tight or rough that rubs against the tattoo.
  • If the tattoo sits where you lie on it, adjust your sleeping position to keep pressure off.
  • No pools, hot springs or long baths while healing — standing water carries infection risk.

III. Day three until fully healed

  • Start applying your aftercare cream and lotion: clean hands, a thin layer, massaged in gently 1–2 times a day. Keeping the skin moisturised prevents thick scabs.
  • Keep the tattoo out of the sun. Cover it with clothing, or use a good sunscreen when you’re out.

IV. What to eat (and not eat) — for at least one week

  • No alcohol — it swells and reddens the tattoo, slows healing and weakens your body’s defences.
  • No spicy food — it can make the tattoo itchy, painful or inflamed.
  • No seafood — a common allergy trigger (rashes, itching, swelling) while healing.
  • Go easy on beef and mutton — they can worsen inflammation. Skip other irritating foods too.

V. While it heals

  • Don’t scratch. Itching is normal — pat the area gently instead. Scratching causes infection and pulls colour out.
  • Check the tattoo as it heals. If anything looks wrong, message your artist or see a doctor — and follow their advice.

A note on second skin

If your artist applied a second-skin film instead of wrap, wear it for 1–2 days before removing it. Everyone’s skin and every piece is different — always follow your own artist’s specific instructions.

This guide is for general reference. Follow the aftercare advice given by your own tattoo artist.
