Neo-Japanese, Korean Fine Line, Abstract or Anime: How to Choose Your Style

Clients often arrive with fifty saved images in five different styles. Choosing a direction matters more than choosing a design — the style decides how your tattoo reads from across a room, how it ages over twenty years, and which artist should hold the machine. Here is how we think about our four signatures.

Neo-Japanese Traditional — the storyteller at full scale

Our signature, and the reason collectors fly in: irezumi lineage — dragons, koi, blossoms and waves — redrawn with new-traditional confidence in colour and composition. This style demands space: sleeves, backpieces, bodysuits. It suits you if you want a piece with narrative weight, designed to wrap the body and reward a second look. Bold linework and saturated colour age gracefully, and in Singapore you will struggle to find another studio that offers it at this scale.

Korean Fine Line

Fine line is the most delicate style we offer — single-needle work built from clean, hair-thin lines with little or no shading. A small flower on the wrist, a moon behind the ear, a name in fine script: quiet, minimal designs that are easy to wear and easy to place.

It is the gentlest way to get a first tattoo. Sessions are short, healing is quick, and the result is subtle enough for any professional setting. Placement is flexible — wrist, ankle, collarbone, behind the ear, along the fingers.

One thing we are always upfront about: ultra-fine lines soften over the years. So we design every fine-line piece slightly bolder than the reference photo you bring in, with breathing room between the lines — so it still reads clearly in ten years, not just in the first month.

If you want something small, personal and precise, this is where to start.

Abstract — the statement

Abstract at Aoi Ink House grows out of watercolour, ink painting, photography and abstract expressionism. Yi works improvisationally — expressive brushstrokes, fluid movement and organic forms, often drawn freehand directly onto the skin, in black and grey or in full colour. No two pieces are ever the same, because no improvisation can be repeated.

Abstract work is for collectors who want impact without representation — a piece that reads as contemporary art first, tattoo second. It asks for confidence in both directions: yours to let the composition happen in the moment, and the artist’s to make it land.

Anime × New Japanese Traditional — the tribute

Your favourite anime character — or an original character created just for you — reimagined in the new Japanese traditional language: wind bars, clouds, waves and florals composed around them, so the piece reads as irezumi first and fandom second. This style is built for full sleeves and large-scale work as one complete, unified composition that follows the body’s lines — never a sticker on skin. See the Gaara arm piece and the anime girl framed by a hannya mask on our portfolio page.

Still unsure? That is what the consultation is for

  • Bring reference images — we will tell you honestly what will and will not age well.
  • Tell us where on the body; placement eliminates half the wrong answers.
  • Tell us your pain threshold and your schedule; a sleeve is a relationship, a fine-line piece is an afternoon.
  • Ask to see healed photos, not fresh ones. Fresh tattoos always look good; healed ones tell the truth.

Our consultations are free and carry no obligation. Most clients leave with a clearer idea — even if they end up booking months later.
